Disability coverage

What you need to know

It can pay to plan for the unexpected. If you’re ill or injured and need to miss work, BAE Systems will pay you a portion of your salary through short-term disability (STD) coverage. Some employees are automatically enrolled, while others must voluntarily elect this coverage. Long-term disability (LTD) is also available for additional protection.

Short-term disability (STD) coverage

You are automatically enrolled in no-cost STD coverage, which provides income protection for up to 26 weeks if you are unable to work due to illness or injury.

Using STD includes a one-week waiting period during which benefits are not payable. The benefit waiting period does not apply if you are hospitalized or give birth.

After the waiting period, the plan will replace 100% of your salary through week six of your disability and 70% of your salary for weeks seven through 26, with no weekly maximum benefit. The benefit payable under the BAE Systems-sponsored disability plan will be offset by any benefit payable by state-sponsored plans.

Long-term disability (LTD) coverage

You can choose to enroll in LTD coverage, which is a voluntary, employee-paid benefit that provides income protection if you cannot work after 26 weeks of continuous disability.

  1. 50% salary replacement; or
  2. 66 2/3% salary replacement.

Each option has a maximum benefit of $20,000 per month for the duration of your disability.
