What you need to know
If you experience the loss of a family member, BAE Systems provides you with time away from work to mourn the loss of your loved one.
Full-time employees are eligible, and paid time off differs by your relationship to the deceased. Part-time employees receive a pro-rated amount based on scheduled work hours. Bereavement leave does not need to be taken in consecutive days, but must be completed within 30 days following your family member’s death.
You are eligible to take forty (40) hours of paid leave upon the death of your:
- Spouse, domestic partner, or significant other
- Parent or step-parent
- An adult who stood in loco parentis to you during childhood
- Mother-in-law or father-in-law
- Son or daughter, including pregnancy loss due to miscarriage or stillbirth
- Son-in-law or daughter-in-law
- Stepchild
- Sister or brother
- Stepsister or stepbrother
- Your domestic partner or significant other’s associated family members listed above receive the same standing as a legal spouse for your bereavement leave
You are eligible to take twenty-four (24) hours of paid leave upon the death of your:
- Grandmother or grandfather
- Grandmother-in-law or grandfather-in-law
- Brother-in-law or sister-in-law
- Grandson or granddaughter
- Uncle or aunt
- Nephew or niece
- Spouse’s uncle or aunt
- Spouse’s nephew or niece
- Your domestic partner or significant other’s associated family members listed above receive the same standing as a legal spouse for your bereavement leave
In addition, you may take eight (8) hours of paid leave to accompany your minor-age child to attend memorial services for your:
- Ex-spouse, ex-domestic partner, or ex-significant other, and
- Their related family members (covered relationships described above)
For more information, visit the Time Away from Work page on the BAE Systems Resource Center portal. You must be on the BAE Systems network to access the Resource Center portal.
Taking Bereavement Leave
You do not have to take the days consecutively, but you must complete your Bereavement Leave within 30 days following the family member’s death. Your supervisor will approve your leave, and you must record the time you take as Bereavement Leave, according to the Timekeeping Guidelines.
Note: Bereavement Leave does not run concurrently with a family medical leave. If you’re a part-time employee, Bereavement Leave is available on a prorated basis, which directly corresponds with your regularly scheduled work hours.
